Flock is a captivating, ephemeral light installation that uses mist and gauze as its canvas, inviting viewers to step into an immersive world of gentle movement and collective experience. Inspired by Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara’s 'Swans Migrating', the piece explores themes of migration, movement, and unity, creating a space where light dances fluidly, echoing the grace and synchronicity of birds in flight.
Through volumetric projection, 'Flock' goes beyond traditional viewing, immersing the audience in cascading waves of light that transform and reshape as they move. This sensory environment encourages the viewer to walk through and interact with the work, blending themselves into the artwork and becoming, even briefly, part of a larger, shifting flock. The interplay of mist and layered gauze screens amplifies the sense of depth and ephemerality, casting fluid shapes that appear to hover and dissolve, capturing the fleeting beauty of migratory patterns in nature.
The installation is the result of a dynamic collaboration between Inspire Youth Arts, Foxwood Academy, artist Sarah Palmer, and Urban Projections, where content was co-created through a series of hands-on workshops. These sessions employed a range of printing techniques to collect textures, forms, and patterns, later woven into the visual language of Flock. Through this co-creation process, participants contributed to a shared vision, embedding the piece with a sense of community and connectedness that resonates with its themes of togetherness and migration.
Flock is a delicate yet powerful reflection on collective movement and shared experience, offering audiences a space to pause, reflect, and engage in a piece that mirrors the beauty of nature’s transient journeys.
