WORK
Fluorescencia is a collaborative project that brought together three international creatives - Urban Projections (Rebecca Smith), visual artist Felipe Pantone, and filmmaker Selina Miles - for an experimental residency in Paramaribo, the vibrant capital of Suriname. Invited to the Switi Rauw street art festival in November 2015, the group set out to merge their practices across film, light, and muralism to create a series of living, site-specific artworks.
Over three days, the team worked with limited resources and unfamiliar surroundings to produce three large-scale murals. Each piece combined hand-painted imagery with projected light, colour, and movement - activated only after dusk, when projectors transformed static walls into immersive canvases of shadow and illumination. These night-time interventions created evolving visual experiences where light and paint played across urban surfaces.
Felipe Pantone contributed his signature style of bold contrasts, geometric forms, and glitch-inspired visuals; Urban Projections layered in real-time projection mapping to add motion and energy; and Selina Miles documented the process through her lens, capturing the challenges, experimentation, and cross-disciplinary exchange that shaped the collaboration.
Fluorescencia blends mural, film, and projection in response to place, exploring how light can bring hand-crafted work to life in unexpected, transformative ways.
